A National Chocolate Day Reminder: You don’t have to earn your dessert.
Somewhere along the way, fitness got tangled up with the idea that enjoying food requires an apology.
“I was bad today.”
“I’ll work it off tomorrow.”
“I earned this.”
It’s National Chocolate Day, so let’s clear something up: Chocolate doesn’t come with a burpee invoice.
You can care about getting stronger, improving your health, and feeling good in your body—and still enjoy dessert.
Look at the whole picture
A healthy eating pattern makes room for variety, with plenty of foods that provide the nutrients your body needs. Favorite treats can fit into that pattern, too. Portion size and how often you enjoy them is what matters.
That doesn’t make chocolate a muscle-building superfood. It means your fitness plan can include something simply because you like it.
Think about the habits you’re building across your week: showing up for training, eating regular meals, making time for recovery, and finding ways to keep going when life gets busy.
That’s a much more useful place to put your attention than holding a courtroom hearing over a peanut butter cup.
Meals.Muscle.Mind
Here’s how I’d approach chocolate through all three:
Meals: Give yourself actual meals. If you’re hungry, a few chocolate chips may be delicious, but they aren’t much of a lunch. Enjoy chocolate inside a healthy recipe or alongside a food that helps meet your needs.
Muscle: Give your workouts a purpose beyond burning off something you ate. Train to get stronger, make everyday tasks easier, or work toward a goal that excites you. Dessert doesn’t need to write your training program.
Mind: Notice the language you use around food. “I enjoyed some chocolate” is a complete sentence. You don’t need to tack on a reason why or any excuses.
Make room for what you enjoy
Maybe that looks like chocolate chips in your oatmeal, strawberries dipped in chocolate, or the occasional brownie after dinner.
Choose something you enjoy. Put some on a plate, sit down, and give yourself a chance to taste it. Then carry on with your day—and the habits you’re working on.
This National Chocolate Day, let’s leave guilt off the menu.
